Aiesha stopped at the sound of Zuna’s voice in the distance. Their paths had finally crossed since Zuna had said her good-bye. Aiesha climbed up the nearest tree for a better view, concealing herself among the leaves. Across from some brush, there sat a being with wrinkles long in the making. Its form was unlike any of the animals she had seen or tales that she had heard of in the lands. A small, pointed nose; strong jawline; and hair only atop its head, exposing sun-kissed skin along its arms. A vine wrapped the robe that cloaked the rest of its body. It spoke with a dry voice. “Only the true key will open the gates to the Cerebral Realm.”

“Yes, I have the key, but where are the gates, Old Man?” said Zuna with an edge to her voice.

Aiesha looked toward Leirgab and Houpor, who wandered loudly below. To avoid giving away her position, she kicked a dying branch from the tree, knocking it to the ground, where it fell to their side. Houpor withdrew his hatchet as Leirgab unsheathed a dagger. She kicked another branch to the ground. They looked upward and calmed down. She motioned downward with her paw so they would stay low.

Her gaze returned, only to watch Zuna say to the Old Man, “You will show us the way.” As Zuna took to the air, Aiesha slid down among the lower branches of the tree to avoid being seen.
